CHI: Sound Bar

When I told my friends I was checking out Sound Bar to see Bombay’s celebrity DJ Aqueel spinning some Bollywood tracks, they dismissed the club as being trashy and “so yesterday.”

Never one to listen to my ultra-critical posse, I was still determined to go especially since the event was hosted by ABCDChicago. And ABCD (take note, my fellow Desis) is pretty reputable in the area for drawing large South Asian crowds to nightclubs for Bhangra/Hindi music-themed parties.

There was no way I was saying no to Aqueel: I was on a mission to re-live my high school partying days in Bombay.

Granted I was at Sound Bar for a special event, I actually really enjoyed the club. It’s one of the bigger venues in Chicago: multi-leveled with a quieter, more sophisticated lounge area downstairs and a rowdier dance floor upstairs. Depending on your mood, you can escape the crowd (Indians can get a lil’ outta control when they hear Bollywood music) and grab a drink downstairs, or get caught up in the frenzy of a packed nightclub upstairs. Other plus points – if you’re looking to hold a private party, there’s a cozy room adjacent to the dance floor that’s quiet and large enough to host your personal posse.

Now for the drawbacks – don’t expect to be blown away. This isn’t a terribly swanky place and if you’re looking for interesting or upscale decor, then this isn’t your cup of tea. I also can’t comment much on the music, since I went on a theme night, but I’ve heard that the club largely draws trance fans. Not exactly my thing, but I’m definitely down to check out Sound Bar again if it’s hosting another Bolly night!
